Any entrepreneur will tell you that failure is part of success; in order to find the right answers you need to start eliminating the wrong ones. But failure is also taxing on your energy and conscience. How do you keep going? How do you convince yourself that you must keep placing small, purposeful bets in order to fin success? One word. Passion.
Passion is an element that is difficult to measure. Yet, when you talk to somebody who is truly passionate about something that they love, you can hear it freely dripping from every syllable that pours out of their mouth. Motivation is a catalyst to passion. It helps you see the light, and drives you toward your goal. Below are my top 10 motivational quotes that help me see the light when things look dark.
10) “By any means necessary” – Malcom X
The phrase itself was coined by the French intellectual, Jean Paul Sartre in his play, Dirty Hands, and popularized by Malcolm X in a speech he presented in the last year of his life.
If you take the quote to heart you will reprioritize your priorities, and make the needed sacrifices to succeed.
9) “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.” Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan, considered the best American basketball player in history, did not reach success over night. As we know, he was rejected from his high school basketball team because he was too short, which forced him to train even harder, to make varsity and eventually the NBA. As he said in his Jordan commercial, he missed 9,000 shots in his career, lost about 300 games, and failed to execute game winning shots 26 times. Despite this, he is unarguably the epitome of success through perseverance. Keep on trying, because once you stop, you have already lost.
8) “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” – Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson really summarizes “The Click Moment” up quite neatly in his quote. You must put in the time to really spread your purposeful bets around. There will be a time when preparation and skill collides with opportunity and luck. Meeting new people, travelling to new places, trying new things with a focus on your goal will help create your own luck. If you are persistent in your efforts, these opportunities for click moments grow exponentially.
7) “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up” – Thomas Edison.
Persistence seems to be a common theme among some of these quotes, but that’s no mistake. It’s a crucial element that is necessary for success and achieving your goals. If you lose hope in your goals and yourself, it’s inevitable that you will encounter failure and not stand back up and take it on again.
6) “A ship is safe in harbor, but that is not what a ship was built for” – William H Shedd
You can hide yourself behind your cubicle from the world, you can avoid doing anything risky, but was that what you put on Earth to do? To be mediocre? NO! You were made to be the best person you can be and that means taking risks and chances and sailing out into the open sea.
5) “The depth of my struggle will determine the height of my success” – Frederick Douglas
As the Buddhists say, “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” No matter how low your lows are, you must fight through that.
4) “To have a great idea, have a lot of them” – Thomas Edison
This was originally mentioned in The Medici Effect, Einstein wrote hundred of papers no one sourced, Piccasso painted thousands of pieces of art no one cared about, Google has launched thousands of apps nobody uses. We as humans are terrible at knowing what is going to be successful, so we naturally have to favor quantity over quality.
3) “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm” – Winston Churchill
Persistence seems to be a running theme
2) “Falling down is how we grow. Staying down is how we die.” – Brian Vaszily
1) “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently” – Henry Ford
Always learn from your mistakes, because isn’t that the purpose? You will be foolish to make the same mistake twice. Reflection is the key here. Review what you did, where it led you, and how you can do it better. There is always a way you can do it better.
As a bonus, I’ll throw in another MJ quote because he is one of my favorite inspirational characters.
“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen” – Michael Jordan
